Fiat 500 high fuel consumption hissing sound
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Fiat 500 is experiencing high fuel consumption, a check engine light, and a hissing sound during acceleration. These symptoms suggest a potential leak in the air intake system. A visual inspection of the intake hose for cracks or disconnections is recommended, as this could lead to engine misfire if not addressed. The issue was resolved by replacing the leaking intake hose.

I appreciate the quick response. Regarding the intake hose, would a visual inspection suffice, or is a more thorough examination required? Also, if the intake hose is leaking, is there a risk of engine misfire?

A visual inspection should reveal any major cracks or splits in the hose. However, smaller leaks can be harder to spot. Given the age of the car, it might be time to take it to the workshop. Better safe than sorry, right?

Understood. Thank you for confirming my suspicions and suggesting a workshop visit. Indeed, it turned out to be a leaking intake hose, which I replaced for 100€. Problem solved!

Those symptoms do point to an air intake issue. I had something similar with my 500. Have you checked the intake hose for cracks or disconnections? A faulty turbocharger vacuum hose could also lead to those problems.
