Fiat Barchetta VANOS Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Fiat Barchetta is experiencing a check engine light and increased fuel consumption, suspected to be due to a fault in the inlet VANOS mechanics, possibly involving a defective camshaft solenoid valve or power supply issue. A similar issue in another vehicle was resolved by checking for oil sludge and replacing the solenoid valves. It is recommended to seek a professional diagnosis to confirm the problem before replacing parts. The issue was confirmed at a workshop, where the inlet camshaft solenoid valve was found broken, and the power supply was unavailable, leading to a repair.

Thanks! I'll check for oil sludge. When you had this issue with your Megane, did you also suspect the camshaft solenoid valves or the VANOS itself?

Yes, those were definitely suspects. I was about to start replacing parts, but I decided to take it to a trusted workshop first. They confirmed the issue and replaced the solenoid valves. It might be worth getting a professional diagnosis before you start throwing parts at it.

Understood, I appreciate the insight. I took it to a workshop and the inlet camshaft solenoid valve was broken and power supply was not available. Repair cost was 250€ Thanks!

I had something similar happen with my 2008 Renault Megane. Check engine light, low power, all signs pointed to variable timing issues. Have you checked for oil sludge? That can gunk things up and prevent the VANOS from working correctly.
