Fiat Bravo EGR Valve Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2007 Fiat Bravo with a diesel engine experienced reduced power, a check engine light, smoke during acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, and a jerking sensation. The suspected cause was a defective or jammed EGR valve. After consulting with others who had similar issues, it was confirmed that the EGR valve was indeed the problem. Replacing the valve resolved the issues, restoring smooth engine performance and eliminating smoke and warning lights.

Thanks for the quick response! The rough idle seems to be more pronounced when the engine is cold. Once the engine warms up a bit, it smooths out slightly, but it's still noticeable. Did you also experience smoke when accelerating and a hissing sound? I am worried about failing the next emissions test.

Yes, I did have some smoke, especially on initial acceleration. No hissing sound, though. Given your symptoms and the cold-start roughness, plus the possibility of failing the emissions test, I'd strongly suggest getting it checked at a reputable workshop. It does sound like the EGR valve and it will probably get worse.

Thanks a lot for your insights! I took your advice and brought it to my mechanic. Turns out the EGR valve was indeed defective. They replaced it, and the total repair cost came to 355€. The car is now running smoothly again, with no more smoke, jerking, or check engine light. Much appreciated!

Sounds frustrating! I had a similar set of symptoms with my old Opel Astra. Reduced power, check engine light, the works. Turned out to be the EGR valve as well. Is the rough idle present when the engine is cold or warm or both?
