Fiat Ducato exhaust temperature sensor issue
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Fiat Ducato experienced a check engine light, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption, with an OBD scan indicating an exhaust temperature sensor issue. A faulty sensor can indeed cause these problems by affecting engine performance and emissions control. An exhaust leak, particularly upstream of the sensor, can also lead to incorrect readings. The solution involved identifying and fixing a small exhaust manifold leak and replacing the sensor, which resolved the issues.

Thanks! How would an exhaust leak affect the temperature sensor? And how can I check for a leak myself?

A leak upstream of the sensor can cause it to read incorrectly since the exhaust gases aren't flowing correctly. To check it yourself, listen for hissing sounds around the exhaust pipes, especially when the engine is cold. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. They can do a proper smoke test and pinpoint the leak, and replace the sensor if needed.

Okay, that makes sense. I took it to a local shop, and they found a small leak in the exhaust manifold, right before the sensor. They replaced the gasket and the exhaust temperature sensor. Total cost was 265€. The check engine light is off, and the engine is running smoothly again. Thanks!

A faulty exhaust temperature sensor can definitely cause those symptoms. The ECU uses it to manage engine performance and emissions. Bad readings could mess with the fuel mixture and timing, reducing power and increasing fuel consumption. Have you checked for exhaust leaks? That could also trigger the sensor.
