Fiat Idea Glow Plug Issue
Summary of the thread
The 2007 Fiat Idea diesel had issues with the preheating lamp staying on, the check engine light, and smoking during acceleration. The suspected cause was a faulty glow control unit, possibly due to bad wiring or connections. After checking the fuses and wiring, it was confirmed at a workshop that the glow control unit was defective with a corroded connector. The repair resolved the issues.

I checked the fuses, and they're fine. The engine is hard to start, especially when it's cold. Could a faulty glow control unit cause engine misfire? Is it possible its location makes it more likely to fail?

A faulty glow control unit can definitely cause engine misfires and rough starts, especially when it's cold. If the fuses are okay, it's likely the unit itself or its wiring. Given the car's age, it's best to take it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis to pinpoint the exact issue.

I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed a defective glow control unit with a corroded connector. The repair, including parts and labor, was 95€. The problems are now resolved. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a real headache! The glow plug relay, part of the glow control unit, might be the problem. Have you checked the glow plug system fuses? A blown fuse could cause this. Does the engine struggle to start, especially in cold weather?
