Fiat Mobi Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor

I'm having issues with my 2019 Fiat Mobi, gasoline engine, with 137025 km. The engine warning light comes on, sometimes the transmission light too. The codes point to a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor. When this happens, the gearbox goes into emergency mode, shifts become jerky, and sometimes it feels like it's slipping. I've even heard grinding noises when shifting. I checked the oil level, and it seemed fine. Any ideas before I take it in?

Summary of the thread

The 2019 Fiat Mobi experienced issues with warning lights, jerky shifting, and grinding noises, attributed to a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor. The gearbox entered emergency mode, and error codes confirmed the sensor problem. The root cause was identified as low transmission oil level, despite appearing adequate when checked cold. The solution involved properly checking and topping up the oil level, replacing the damaged sensor, and resetting error codes, resulting in restored vehicle performance.

That sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my 2016 Opel Corsa. Same symptoms: warning lights, jerky shifting, and limp mode. In my case, the error code also pointed to a temperature sensor. Did you check the oil level properly? Because on my Corsa the error was caused by the gearbox oil level being too low.

Thanks for the quick reply! When you say 'properly,' what do you mean? I checked the dipstick when the engine was cold, is there another way I should be checking the transmission oil level?

Yes, exactly. The procedure for checking the transmission oil level on my Corsa was quite specific. It needed to be checked when the engine was warm and running, and with the transmission in a specific gear (usually Park or Neutral). Also, you need the specific dipstick for the transmission. If you checked it cold, you might not be getting an accurate reading. Even if the level is correct, the sensor may be faulty, but first ensure oil level is correct. Either way, I would take it to a workshop so they can read the data from the transmission control unit. They should also check the oil pressure.

Thanks! I really appreciate the advice. I took it to the shop as you suggested. Turns out, the transmission oil level WAS indeed too low, even though it looked okay on the dipstick when cold. They topped it up, replaced the sensor as it was damaged by overheating, and reset the error codes. Total cost was 365€. Runs like new now!
