Fiat Punto Stalling at Idle

Hi, I'm having a perplexing issue with my 2009 Fiat Punto, gasoline engine. It's got 58211 km on the clock. The check engine light comes on intermittently, and the engine occasionally stalls at idle, especially when it's cold. I've also noticed reduced engine power, particularly at higher speeds. I recently replaced the fuel filter, and I suspect there might be an error entry causing this malfunction of the fuel pressure regulator. Could this be related to a pressure drop in the fuel system?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Fiat Punto is experiencing intermittent check engine light activation and occasional stalling at idle, particularly when cold, along with reduced engine power. The issue is suspected to be related to a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator, potentially due to a pressure drop in the fuel system. After checking the fuel pump relay and reading OBD error codes, it was confirmed that the problem was indeed a defective fuel pressure regulator, which was subsequently repaired.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I also drive a Punto. I had similar symptoms a while back: check engine light and a rough idle. Did you check the fuel pump relay? It might be worth a look. What kind of error codes are you getting?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the fuel pump relay specifically. I will add it to the checklist. As for the error codes, are you referring to the ones read by the OBD scanner? If so, could you please elaborate, what was the exact error?

Yes, I'm referring to the OBD error codes. In my case, it was related to low fuel pressure. Considering you suspect the fuel pressure regulator and are getting similar symptoms, I would suggest getting the car checked by a professional. It could save you time and further complications.

Thanks for the advice! You were right. It turned out to be a defective fuel pressure regulator, which was causing the check engine light to trigger. The error entry after changing the fuel filter was indeed the cause. Had it repaired. Cost me 45€.
