Fiat Talento Power Steering Issue

My 2021 Fiat Talento, gasoline engine, is giving me some grief. Mileage is 54778 km. The power steering is acting up. I'm getting a vibrating steering wheel, and the handling feels spongy. Hooked it up to a diagnostics tool and there's an error stored, but nothing specific. It's also getting harder to steer, feels like the power steering is cutting out intermittently. I've checked the fluid level, seems okay. Anyone else had similar issues?

Summary of the thread

A 2021 Fiat Talento with 54,778 km is experiencing power steering issues, including a vibrating steering wheel, spongy handling, and intermittent steering difficulty. The problem may be due to a failing power steering system, possibly caused by a sensor malfunction or faulty connection. Checking the electrical connections and voltage supplied to the power steering components is recommended. The issue was resolved by cleaning and securing a defective cable connection to the power steering, restoring normal steering function.

The symptoms you describe – vibrating steering wheel, spongy handling, error code, and increased steering effort – do point towards a potential issue within the steering system. Given that the effort required to steer has increased, it is possible that the power steering has failed or is failing. Considering the error stored in the memory, it may be a sensor malfunction or a faulty connection. Inspecting the cable and plug connections to the power steering components is a good starting point. Power steering systems often rely on electronic sensors to control hydraulic pressure, so a defective connection can certainly cause such issues. Have you checked the voltage supplied?

Thanks for the reply. When you say 'voltage supplied', where exactly should I be checking? Is there a specific connector or sensor I should be focusing on first?

When I mention 'voltage supplied', I'm referring to the electrical power provided to the power steering pump and control module. Begin by identifying the power steering pump, typically located near the engine or on the steering rack itself. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the pump's connector. Consult your vehicle's wiring diagram to identify the correct pins for voltage measurement. A wiring diagram provides specifics about where the relevant sensors are located. If the voltage is significantly lower than the specified voltage (usually around 12V), there could be an issue with the wiring, a fuse, or the power steering control module. If you are unsure I'd advise you to take the vehicle to a qualified technician to diagnose the issue more accurately.

Appreciate the detailed explanation. I'll have a look at the voltage, but sounds like it's beyond my capabilities. I took it to a local mechanic, and you were spot on – it was a defective cable connection to the power steering. They cleaned the contacts and secured the plug. Total cost was 95€. Steering is back to normal now.
