Figo Transfer Case Oil Wear
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Ford Figo diesel with 70,000 miles is experiencing gearbox slipping and unclean shifting, particularly when cold. The suspected cause is a transfer case oil wear fault, potentially due to defective gears. The fluid was found to be murky, indicating possible wear or incorrect fluid type. The solution involved a mechanic confirming the issue and replacing defective gears, emphasizing the importance of regular transfer case oil changes to prevent such problems.

Good questions! To be honest, I've never touched the transfer case oil. I assumed it was a 'sealed for life' kind of deal, like some gearboxes. Is there a recommended change interval for the Figo's transfer case, and what type of oil should I be using? I'm guessing a simple drain and fill might not cut it if there's gear damage, but it's worth a shot before tearing things apart.

Sealed for life is a myth in most cases, especially with diesels. Given the mileage and the fluid condition, the symptoms point to a transfer case issue. It’s very likely the gears are worn. Before throwing parts at it, a workshop inspection is advisable. The correct fluid spec is vital for longevity. However, considering the gear slip, a fluid change may only be a temporary fix. Better have it checked before you cause more damage.

Thanks a million! I took your advice and brought it to my trusted mechanic. They confirmed the transfer case oil wear fault due to defective gears and charged me 330€ for the parts and labor. Ouch! But at least it's shifting smoothly again. Lesson learned: transfer case oil changes are NOT optional!

Murky fluid is definitely a red flag. Have you ever had the transfer case oil changed? And are you sure you're using the correct fluid type? Incorrect viscosity can cause all sorts of shifting problems.
