Ford Escape Defective Lambda Sensor

I'm at my wit's end with my 2023 Ford Escape gasoline engine! The check engine light is on, it's running rough, and I'm smelling exhaust fumes. Mileage is at 92757 km. Exhaust is definitely leaking. Could this be a particulate filter issue or something worse?

Rough running and exhaust leak with a check engine light could be a few things. Have you noticed any loss of power? Is the smell constant or intermittent? It's probably not a simple fix. You should check the lambda, EGR and NOx sensors. Any recent work done on the exhaust system?

Power seems normal, but the exhaust smell is strong all the time, especially when the engine is cold. I haven't had any exhaust work done recently. Lambda sensor defective, could that be it?

A constant strong exhaust smell points away from particulate filter issues, I think. Defective lambda sensor is a strong possibility given your symptoms. Get it checked by a workshop, could be an expensive fix. Expect to pay around 375€.

Thanks for the insights! Took it to the shop, and you were spot on – defective lambda sensor. Replaced it for 375€. Runs like new!
