Ford Expedition Intermittent Starting Issue

Hey, I have a 2001 Ford Expedition with a gasoline engine. Lately, it's been acting up. Sometimes it just won't start, other times it shuts off while I'm driving, and occasionally it runs really rough. Mileage is at 117559 km. I checked the fuses, but they seem okay. Any ideas?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my old Renault Scenic, though mine was a diesel. Symptoms were almost identical – random stalls, refusing to start, and the engine running like it was about to fall apart. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty ignition switch. Did you check the starter motor?

Interesting. How did you figure out it was the ignition switch? And how did you verify the starter motor was fine?

Well, after a ton of frustration, a mechanic friend suggested wiggling the ignition key while trying to start the Scenic. If it caught and ran, it pointed to the switch. Also, he used a multimeter to see if the starter motor was getting power when the key was turned. It was getting power, but sometimes it just wouldn't engage. That’s when we suspected the switch for sure. A new switch fixed everything. Better check your Expedition in a workshop.

Thanks for the tip! I took it to a shop, and it was indeed the ignition switch, like you said! Repair cost 52€. Replaced it, and now it runs perfectly. Appreciate the help!
