Ford Explorer engine power loss

Hey, my 2007 Ford Explorer with a gasoline engine is giving me some trouble. The check engine light keeps coming on, and I've noticed a definite drop in engine power plus my fuel consumption is way up. My car has 82254 km. Could a faulty exhaust temperature sensor be the culprit? Maybe caused by a leak somewhere?

Sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my Explorer. Check engine light, power loss... was a pain. Any temperature fluctuation when it happens? It could well be related to the exhaust system components.

Yeah, now that you mention it, there are temperature fluctuations. It's not consistent though. Where exactly in the exhaust system should I be looking? Or is it something best left to a professional?

Given the temp fluctuations and your symptoms, a faulty heat sensor is a strong possibility. I'd say it's best to get it checked by a workshop. They can pinpoint the exact location of the leak and confirm if it's the sensor before suggesting a sensor replacement.

Thanks for the advice! Turns out you were right on the money. Took it to a workshop, and they found a leak in the exhaust causing the sensor to throw errors. New sensor and exhaust repair cost me 265€. Runs like a dream now!
