Fortuner diesel particulate filter issue

I have a 2005 Toyota Fortuner, diesel engine, with about 135k km. Recently, I've noticed a drop in engine power and a lot of smoke when I accelerate. Could this be a defective diesel particulate filter? Anyone experienced something similar?

Sounds like it. Reduced power and smoke are classic DPF symptoms. Has the engine light come on? What about fuel efficiency, has that taken a hit too? You might also be experiencing increased backpressure in the exhaust system. Have you had the vehicle inspected recently?

The engine light is indeed on. Fuel efficiency has decreased noticeably, and backpressure might be the cause, I'm not sure how to confirm it. Should I try to clean the diesel filter or replace it?

Well, cleaning it might help temporarily, but with those symptoms and mileage, it's probably kaput. Is it worth risking further damage? A defective DPF can cause more issues down the road. I'd suggest getting it checked by a workshop. They can confirm the DPF is the culprit and advise on the best course of action.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to a workshop, and you were right: the diesel particulate filter was defective. They replaced it, and now everything is back to normal. Cost me 1550€, but at least the problem is solved.
