Fortuner preheating lamp stays on

Having trouble with my 2006 Toyota Fortuner, diesel engine. The preheating lamp won't switch off, the check engine light is on, and there's smoke when accelerating. It has about 99721 km. I suspect a defective preheating control unit or a bad cable connection. Anyone else seen this?

Sounds familiar. Had a similar issue with my old Audi A4. The glow plug light stayed on, and it turned out to be a faulty connection in the vehicle heater circuit. Did you check the relay?

Thanks! I'm not very experienced. Could you be more specific about where to find the relay and what to look for?

The relay is usually near the battery or in the fuse box. If you're not familiar, it's best to take it to a workshop. A defective preheating unit can cause more damage if not handled incorrectly.

Thanks for the advice. I've taken it to a workshop and they've confirmed it's the preheating control unit. They quoted me 95€ for the repair, including a new connector, so I'm giving them the go-ahead. Hopefully, that'll sort it out.
