Freestar Overvoltage Error Cascade

I'm chasing down a weird electrical gremlin in my 2005 Ford Freestar with a gasoline engine. Mileage is pushing 160k km. I'm getting an overvoltage error logged in multiple modules, causing a cascade of failures – ABS, traction control, you name it. I've also noticed the battery seems weak when starting, and there's a general electrical malfunction vibe going on. I suspect either the alternator is overcharging or something's screwy with the ECU. Anyone seen this before?

Woah, sounds like a party of issues! Overvoltage is nasty. Have you checked the battery itself? A dead or heavily discharged battery can cause the alternator to work overtime and potentially fry things. Also, any signs of corrosion on the battery terminals or grounding points?

Good point about the battery, I'll check it more thoroughly. When you say 'fry things,' are we talking potential ECU damage here? Just trying to gauge the severity and whether I should be bracing for a huge repair bill. Also, where exactly are the grounding points I should be checking?

Yeah, overvoltage can definitely cook the ECU if left unchecked. Not saying it is fried, but it's a risk. Since you have so many systems failing, and you aren't sure what you are doing I would say it's time to visit the workshop.

Thanks for the advice. You were spot on about the battery! It was heavily discharged and likely defective. Replaced it, but the alternator was also shot from working overtime. Ended up replacing both. Final bill was 290€. At least everything seems to be working now!
