Fullback Automatic Transmission Problems

I'm having trouble with my 2016 Fiat Fullback diesel. It's only done 25525 km, but the automatic transmission is acting bonkers. The shifting is all over the place, and the transmission indicator light keeps popping on. It doesn’t shift smoothly like it used to, and sometimes it feels like it's stuck in emergency mode. Any ideas what could be causing this? I'm worried it's something major.

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Fiat Fullback diesel with only 25,525 km is experiencing erratic automatic transmission behavior, including rough shifting and the transmission indicator light activating. The issue may be caused by low voltage affecting the vehicle's electrical system, which can disrupt the transmission control unit. Checking and addressing the battery and charging system resolved the problem, leading to smooth shifting after an electrical fix and transmission oil change.

Whoa, that sounds rough! I had a similar experience with my old BMW 3 Series, although it was a petrol engine. The transmission started acting up in a crazy way. For me the culprit ended up being low voltage causing all sorts of electrical gremlins. Have you checked your battery and charging system? It might be worth a look before you start tearing into the transmission itself.

Interesting! So, what exactly do you mean by 'low voltage'? Was it just a dead battery, or something more complicated? And how did that mess with your transmission? I'm not really a car expert, so any details you can share would be super helpful.

Well, in my case, the battery was getting old and not holding a charge properly. This meant the car's electrical system wasn't getting the voltage it needed, which can really mess with the sensors and control units that manage the automatic transmission. It's like the brain is getting scrambled signals! Honestly, I’d suggest getting the battery and charging system professionally checked. It might save you a fortune compared to just assuming it's the transmission itself. My car ended up at the workshop.

Thanks a lot for the tip! I took your advice and had the battery and charging system checked out. Turns out there was indeed undervoltage in the vehicle. Apparently, that was messing with the transmission control unit. They sorted out the electrical issue, did a transmission oil change and now it’s shifting smoothly again. Total cost was 240€. I really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction!
