Fusion Camshaft Sensor Issue

I'm having trouble with my 2005 Ford Fusion with a gasoline engine, about 234557 km on it. It's been starting poorly, and the engine stalls sometimes when idling. The check engine light is on. I suspect it might be a defective camshaft sensor, maybe the encoder wheel on the camshafts. Thoughts before I dive deeper?

I had almost the exact same thing happen with my Fusion! The engine misfired, the check engine light was on, and it was stalling constantly. Have you tried testing the crankshaft sensor as well? It could be related, and might give you a clearer picture before you start replacing parts. What codes are you getting from the check engine light?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't tested the crankshaft sensor yet, I'll add that to my list. I pulled a P0340 which points to the camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction. Does that match what you saw? Is there a specific way you'd recommend testing the crankshaft sensor? Any tips would be appreciated!

P0340 sounds exactly like what I had. I did some sensor testing myself, but honestly, it was a bit beyond my capabilities without the right equipment. In the end, I took it to a trusted workshop; they confirmed it was the camshaft sensor and the encoder wheel issue. I would suggest you to get a professional diagnosis.

Okay, thanks for confirming my suspicion and sharing your experience. I appreciate the advice about the workshop. I've booked it in and they've quoted 695€ for the camshaft sensor replacement and the encoder wheel repair. Hopefully, that'll sort it out. Thanks again for your help!
