Thanks. Could you be more specific about checking the cable and plug connections? I'm not that familiar with car electrical systems, so any extra detail would help.

I'm no expert, but my issue turned out to be a defective connection. It caused all sorts of weirdness. If you're not comfortable poking around, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. They can check the wiring and connections to the control units. It's probably a connectivity issue.

Based on your advice, I booked it in with a technician. They found and fixed a defective cable/plug connection. Cost me 95€. Thanks again for your help.

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my Fusion, though not the overheating. Check engine light and coolant issues were definitely there. Could be a dodgy connection somewhere. The CAN bus, which is the communication network in your car, might be the culprit, or rather a defective connection between a control module and the CAN bus. Have you checked the cable and plug connections?
