G Klasse Diesel Power Steering Problems

Power steering issues with my 2001 Mercedes G Klasse Diesel. At 223662 km, the steering wheel vibrates, and handling feels spongy. I've also noticed increased steering effort, almost like the power steering is failing intermittently. The error memory has a stored fault. I suspect a defective cable or plug connection. Has anyone experienced similar issues? What should I check before assuming it's the steering pump or steering rack? I am budgeting around 95€ for repairs. Is a wheel alignment necessary afterwards?

Whoa, sounds rough! I had something kinda similar happen with my G Klasse. My steering wheel was shaking like crazy, and it was a real pain to turn. Is it more noticeable at certain speeds? I'd check the power steering fluid level first, that's the easiest thing. Also, is it making any weird noises? Like a whining sound when you turn the steering wheel? Could be the steering pump going bad. But a defective connection sounds plausible too. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. It does seem more pronounced at lower speeds, especially when parking. The fluid level seems fine. Regarding the sound, I haven't specifically noticed a whine, but I will pay closer attention. By defective connection, I'm thinking a loose ground or frayed wire somewhere in the steering column circuit. Did your issue eventually require a new steering rack or steering column?

Okay, lower speeds, that's good info. Mine wasn't as speed-dependent, but still similar symptoms. I definitely wouldn't start tearing into the steering rack or steering column just yet! Those are expensive fixes! Honestly, the electrical stuff can be a nightmare to trace yourself. I'd probably take it to a trusted workshop and have them run diagnostics. They can pinpoint the exact problem with their fancy computers. That way, you're not just throwing parts at it and hoping something sticks.

Appreciate the advice. Took it to the shop as suggested. Turns out it was indeed a faulty connection to the power steering control module. They cleaned the contacts and secured the plug. Cost me 95€. Steering feels normal again. No need for a steering rack replacement. Thanks again!
