G35 Engine Crisis: Metal in Oil & Multiple Failed Systems

Hey everyone, my 2003 Infiniti G is giving me serious trouble lately. Engine's running rough with significant power loss, jerking during acceleration, and burning more fuel than usual. Check engine light is on, and I'm hearing concerning valve noises plus some other weird sounds from the engine. Recently found metal particles in the oil too. I suspect it might be a faulty camshaft adjustment, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. What was your diagnosis and repair process? Any specific workshop experiences or repair costs to share? Thanks in advance

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2005 Infiniti M35 last year (I'd say I have some experience working on cars, but I'm no expert). The symptoms you're describing sound really familiar. Mine turned out to be a faulty neck shaft solenoid valve similar symptoms with rough running and power loss. Took it to my trusted mechanic who diagnosed it pretty quickly. Total repair came to about 250€ including parts and labor. Fixed the issue completely no more jerking or power loss since then. But honestly, those metal particles in your oil are concerning that wasn't part of my issue. Could point to something more serious. Which G model do you have exactly (G35/G37)? Also, how many miles are on the clock? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience with Infinitis. Quick tip: Don't wait too long on this one. These symptoms can lead to bigger problems if left unchecked. Feel free to share more details, and I'll try to help further!

Thanks for your input! I've got the G35, currently at 244445 KM on the odometer. My last service was about 3 months ago, and everything was fine until these issues started popping up last week. The metal particles in the oil are definitely what's worrying me the most that wasn't happening before. I think I might need a more thorough diagnosis than I initially thought. Were there any specific warning signs before your solenoid valve completely failed? I'm trying to figure out if I should still drive it to the shop or get it towed to avoid any further damage.

Hey again! Sorry to hear you're still having concerns. I totally get it when my M35 started acting up, I was super worried too. Mine was at about 230000 KM when the solenoid issue happened, so pretty similar mileage to yours. Looking back at my experience, and especially with those metal shavings you mentioned (which I didn't have), I'd definitely recommend getting it towed. I actually made the mistake of driving mine for about a week after the first symptoms, and in hindsight, that probably wasn't the smartest move. The solenoid issue started with just minor jerking during acceleration, but it got progressively worse pretty quickly. With my car, before the solenoid completely failed, I noticed the engine would sort of "hesitate" when accelerating from a stop, especially when the engine was cold. But yours sounds potentially more serious with those metal particles. That's something I haven't dealt with on my Infiniti, and it makes me think there might be more going on than just a solenoid issue. Have you noticed any burning smell or blue smoke from the exhaust? That's something I was watching for with mine, but thankfully never saw. Given what you're describing, I'd say better safe than sorry get it towed. These VQ engines are pretty solid, but when they start showing multiple symptoms like this, it's best to play it safe. Keep me posted on what you find out! Always interested to learn more about these cars.

Thanks so much for the detailed response! You're right I definitely shouldn't risk driving it. After reading your experience and advice, I've just called for a tow truck to take it to my mechanic tomorrow morning. Better to spend a bit on towing than risk major engine damage. Come to think of it, I have noticed that cold-start hesitation you mentioned, though I haven't seen any blue smoke yet. Really appreciate you sharing your experience with the solenoid valve issue, but I'm preparing myself for potentially worse news given those metal particles. I'll update this thread once I get a proper diagnosis from the mechanic. Thanks again for taking the time to help out this is exactly why I love the car community. Will let you know what they find!
