Galaxy Spongy Brake Pedal

Hey, I've got a 2004 Ford Galaxy with a gasoline engine and a worrying problem. The brake fluid level seems low, and I'm getting some strange feedback from the brake pedal. It feels kinda spongy, if that makes sense. The car has only done 54044 km, so it shouldn't be anything major, right? I've checked for obvious leaks, but haven't found anything. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Ford Galaxy owner reported a spongy brake pedal and low brake fluid level, raising concerns about potential brake system issues. The problem was identified as likely due to worn brake pads and discs, which can cause the caliper piston to travel further, using more fluid and leading to a spongy feel. It was advised to have the brake system checked by a professional, as worn brakes can trigger the brake fluid warning light and compromise safety. The issue was resolved by replacing the front brakes and brake fluid.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Spongy brake pedal and low fluid on a Galaxy? Sounds awfully familiar. I had a similar issue a while back with my Galaxy. Do you know what the brake pads and discs look like? If they are worn, the caliper piston has to travel further, which uses more fluid from the reservoir, dropping the fluid level and potentially causing the spongy feel. Hydraulic brakes rely on an incompressible fluid to transmit force; air in the system or excessive piston travel will ruin that.

Okay, that makes sense. I haven't actually checked the pads and discs yet. Is it possible for worn brakes to cause the brake fluid light to come on too? I had the warning light pop up on the dashboard a couple of times.

Yes, absolutely! A low brake fluid level can trigger the warning light. It's designed to alert you to potential problems in the brake system. Given the spongy pedal and warning light, I'd strongly suggest getting the brake system checked by a professional. Worn brakes can definitely be the culprit, but it's best to be sure. Driving with compromised brakes is extremely dangerous.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to the workshop and you were spot on! The front brakes were worn down. Had them replaced, along with the brake fluid. Cost me around 480€, but at least it's sorted now.
