Galloper Overheating at High Speeds
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Hyundai Galloper is experiencing overheating issues, particularly at high speeds, despite having adequate coolant levels. The problem could be related to a defective map thermostat, which regulates engine temperature. It's suggested to consult a mechanic for diagnosis and potential replacement of the thermostat, as it might be complex for a layperson to handle.

Thanks for the reply! It seems to overheat more when I'm driving at higher speeds, especially uphill. When idling, the temperature gauge creeps up slowly, but it doesn't go into the red zone as quickly as when I'm driving. Could you tell me more about the map thermostat? Where is it located, and is it difficult to replace?

The location of the map thermostat can vary depending on your engine configuration, but it's usually near where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. Its function is similar to the regulator in a steam engine, controlling the flow of energy. While I commend your initiative to fix this yourself, replacing a map thermostat could be complex depending on your skill level. Based on my experience, I recommend consulting a trusted auto repair shop.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I suspected it might be something beyond my abilities. I'll take it to my local mechanic and mention the thermostat. Hopefully, it won't cost me an arm and a leg. I was quoted about 350€.

Greetings. I own a Galloper as well, and experienced similar symptoms. It could be a defective map thermostat. As a layman, it's hard to diagnose that. Is the overheating happening even when the engine is idling or only during higher speeds?
