Gear Selector Display Problem

I did scan it, and it shows a defective control unit. You think that's the gear selector itself? The car dashboard is just showing dashes instead of the gear.

A defective control unit could certainly cause the symptoms you're describing. The gear shift, shift knob, and electronic display are all interconnected. Before you replace it yourself, I would strongly advise getting a professional opinion. It's like trying to diagnose a heart problem based on a finger cramp you might be right, but it's best to confirm.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I took it in and you were spot on. The control unit was indeed the culprit. Cost me about 1000€ to get it sorted. At least the gear shift works now!

That sounds similar to an issue I encountered with my BMW 5 series. The electronic display went haywire, and the car acted like it didn't know what gear it was in. Have you checked for any error codes using an OBD2 scanner? It might give you a better idea of what's happening before you start replacing parts.
