Genesis Brake Light Problems
Summary of the thread
The 2008 Hyundai Genesis experienced brake light issues, with lights failing to illuminate and an error message appearing on the infotainment screen. A diagnostic scan indicated a problem with the brake light switch. The likely cause was a malfunctioning switch, possibly due to mechanical wear or electrical issues. The recommended solution was to have a qualified technician inspect and replace the switch, which resolved the problem.

Thanks for the quick reply! No, I haven't had any work done around the brake pedal recently. So, is replacing the switch something I could do myself, or is it more complicated than it looks? I've done some basic stuff on cars before, like changing oil and filters, but I've never messed with anything related to the braking system.

Given your admitted level of experience, and the safety-critical nature of the braking system, I must strongly advise against attempting to replace the brake light switch yourself. Incorrect installation or adjustment could lead to brake light malfunction, posing a significant safety risk. While the switch itself is often inexpensive, proper diagnosis and calibration are crucial. Therefore, I recommend taking your Genesis to a qualified technician for inspection and repair.

You were spot on. I took it to a local mechanic, and it turned out to be exactly what you said, the brake light switch! They replaced it, and everything's working perfectly now. Turns out the error code was a false positive, since the old switch wasn't sending the signal. Apparently, I was resting my foot on the brake pedal! The car thought I wanted to brake all the time, and gave up at some point. Cost me nothing since the dealer covered it, even with the mileage. Thanks again for your help!

Greetings. The symptoms you describe (brake light failure, error message, diagnostic code pointing to the brake light switch) strongly suggest a malfunctioning brake light switch. The switch signals the brake lights to illuminate upon pressing the brake pedal. Failure can be caused by mechanical wear, electrical issues, or corrosion. Has there been any work done recently near the brake pedal?
