The car is driven in all weather, including rain and light snow. I haven't seen any direct damage to the sensor, but the fault started after a wet week. Could moisture cause the sensor to malfunction?

Moisture is a common cause. No disrespect intended, but the diagnostic report will show if the error is moisture related or something else. A failing sensor can cause issues and usually needs professional help. A workshop visit seems wise.

Turns out it was the radar sensor, covered in dirt. After cleaning, the system works again. Total cost was about 45€.

Those symptoms strongly suggest a fault with the radar sensor or its wiring. A diagnostic scan would be helpful. An error message and stored error points to a genuine sensor failure, not just a dirty sensor. Has the sensor been exposed to harsh conditions?
