GLK gearbox issues and transfer case oil wear

I haven't checked the fluid level myself yet, but if it was low, wouldn't the warning light come on? And if the fluid is burnt, does that definitely mean it's the gears? I'd really prefer to avoid replacing the transfer case if at all possible.

A low level might trigger a light, but it doesn't always happen. My light only came on after a grinding sound started. As for the burnt fluid, it's a strong indicator of internal wear. It could be something else, like a clogged filter, but honestly, with those symptoms and the oil wear fault code, it really does sound like gear wear. I think taking it to a reputable workshop is the best next step. They can properly diagnose it before you commit to any repairs.

Thanks for the insights. I'll get it to a workshop and have them take a closer look. Turns out it was indeed the transfer case and I authorized the repair.

Whoa, that sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my old Volvo XC70. It wasn't exactly the same, but I had some rough shifting and a weird gear grinding noise, especially when accelerating. I also got a warning light which indicated transmission issues. For me it also turned out to be transfer case oil wear. Have you checked the transfer fluid level? Is it discolored or does it smell burnt?
