Grandland X Water Sensor Error

Afternoon. I'm having a head-scratcher with my 2020 Vauxhall Grandland X, diesel engine. The check engine light keeps popping on, and when I hook it up to a reader, it throws a water sensor error. It's done 76593 km. Odd thing is, sometimes the engine runs a little rough when the light's on. I've had a quick look at the sensor, but I can't see anything obvious like damaged wires. Could it just be a faulty sensor, or is there something else I should be checking first? I'm not a mechanic, but I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty!

Hello there! Water sensor issue, you say? Interesting. Does the error code specify which sensor it is? I'm wondering if maybe the sensor itself is fine, but the wiring to it is the problem. Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting the plug to the sensor? Sometimes just doing that can clean up any corrosion that might be causing a bad connection. Also, are there any signs of moisture or dampness around the sensor or the wiring?

Thanks for the reply! The error code is fairly generic, just says 'water sensor malfunction'. I did have a quick wiggle of the connector, but didn't disconnect it. Should I try giving it a proper clean? Is there anything specific I should use to clean it, or will something like electrical contact cleaner do the trick?

Right, a generic code isn't ideal. Yes, definitely try disconnecting the connector and giving it a good clean with electrical contact cleaner. Make sure everything is dry before reconnecting it. Given that it's a diesel, is there any chance water has contaminated the fuel filter? Although, a faulty cable or plug connection of the component is likely. If cleaning the connector doesn't solve it, and the engine is running rough, it might be best to take it to a workshop for proper diagnostics. You don't want to risk doing more damage. The estimated cost for repair should be around 95€.

Took your advice and cleaned the connector with contact cleaner. No joy. Bit the bullet and took it to a local garage. Turns out you were spot on about the wiring! They found a dodgy connection, sorted it, and now the light's gone and it's running smoothly again. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
