H1 Heavy Steering and Vibration

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2010 Hyundai H1, diesel engine. The vehicle has 112132 km on the clock. I've noticed increased effort required when steering, almost as if the power steering is failing intermittently. Additionally, the steering wheel vibrates/shakes, especially at lower speeds. Could this be related to a defective steering angle sensor? I suspect faulty coding might be the cause.

Summary of the thread

The issue with the 2010 Hyundai H1 involved heavy steering and vibrations, suspected to be linked to a defective steering angle sensor. The faulty sensor was potentially causing incorrect data to be sent to the electronic stability control (ESC), leading to erratic behavior and increased steering effort. After recalibration and correcting the sensor's coding, the problem was resolved.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my old BMW 3 Series. The symptoms were almost identical – heavy steering and vibrations. In my case, it turned out to be the steering angle sensor too, messing with the electronic stability control.

Interesting. When you say 'messing with the electronic stability control,' could you elaborate? What exactly was the interaction between the sensor fault and the ESC? Did it also point to alignment problems?

Sure, the faulty sensor was feeding incorrect data to the ESC module. The car basically thought it was constantly in a skid, which activated the stability control erratically, hence the vibration and heavy steering. It didn't directly cause alignment problems, but the ESC was fighting against my inputs and any minor steering adjustments, which probably didn't help. I would definitely get it checked out by a workshop.

Thanks, that clarifies things significantly. I had the steering angle sensor checked and its coding was faulty. After recalibration and coding, the issue is resolved. Total repair cost was 195€. Appreciate the insight!
