Hiace Faulty Lighting

I've got a 2007 Toyota Hiace with a gasoline engine, and my lights are acting possessed. They switch on by themselves! I scanned it and there's an error stored. I've checked the fuses, but they all seem fine. Could it be the headlight switch itself? Any ideas where to start?

I had a similar issue with my Hiace, although mine's a bit older. Random lights flickering, dash lights going crazy... turned out to be a dodgy connection in the light switch wiring. Check the cable and plug connection. Worth a look before you start replacing parts. Give it a wiggle and see if anything changes. Have you checked the ground connections too?

Where exactly should I be looking for this dodgy connection? Is it behind the light switch itself, or somewhere closer to the fuse box? And how do I check the ground connections?

Mine was right at the back of the light switch where the plug connects. Give the wires a little tug – gently! If one feels loose, that could be your culprit. As for the ground, follow the black wires coming from the headlight assembly; they usually bolt to the body somewhere nearby. Make sure that connection is clean and tight. Honestly, though, electrical gremlins can be a pain. If you're not confident tracing it all, it might be worth a visit to a workshop to get it sorted. Mine ended up costing 95€ to repair because of a defective cable.

I think I'll take it to a workshop. I don't want to mess anything up further. At least now I have an idea of what to tell them and what to expect cost-wise. The error was due to a defective cable. They fixed the cable and the light switch works now.
