Highlander Oil Pressure Warning

The oil appears sludgy. The last oil and filter change was overdue by about 8000 kilometers. I used a synthetic blend, 5W-30. I haven't heard knocking, but there might be a slight change in the engine's sound. Could this mean engine damage, and should I act fast?

Sludgy, overdue oil is bad, even with synthetic blend. Sludge restricts oil flow, explaining the low oil pressure light. The engine might be okay, but restricted oil flow can cause wear. That slight engine sound change could be the start of damage. Stop driving it and take it to a workshop. They can do an oil flush, check the oil pump, and look for internal engine damage. Driving it more could turn a minor issue into a major engine rebuild. It might be worth using original spare parts.

I had the car taken to a workshop. They said the oil was contaminated due to the extended maintenance, so they did an oil flush and filter replacement. It cost 165€. No lasting engine damage was found. Thanks again.

The oil pressure light and discolored oil on a hybrid Highlander of that year is concerning. Exceeding the maintenance interval could be a factor, but rule out other causes. What does the oil look like? Milky, sludgy, or with particles? When was the last oil and filter change, and what type of oil was used? Does the engine sound different, like knocking?
