Honda HRV Diesel: EGR Drama & Rough Running Symptoms

Hey everyone! My 2017 Honda HRV diesel (26903 km) is giving me headaches lately. The engine's running rough, stalling unusually, and losing power. There's also a strong exhaust smell and the check engine light is on. I suspect it might be the EGR valve acting up. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm feeling a bit cautious. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their HRV? Would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations for fixing this issue. Any tips on what to watch out for when getting it repaired? Thanks!

Hey there! I dealt with almost identical symptoms in my 2014 Honda CR-V diesel last year. The rough idling, power loss, and that unmistakable exhaust smell turned out to be a clogged EGR valve. My mechanic showed me the valve, it was completely gunked up with carbon deposits. They had to remove, clean, and test the valve function. In my case, the valve was also stuck in a partially open position and needed replacement. It wasn't a quick fix, took about a day's work including diagnostics. This is definitely a serious issue that needs addressing soon, running with a faulty EGR can lead to more engine problems down the line. Make sure whoever works on it checks both the valve and the EGR cooler, as they often get clogged together. Just make sure you get a proper diagnosis first, while the symptoms match an EGR issue, having the error codes read will confirm it.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's exactly what I was worried about. My symptoms sound identical to what you went through. I'm actually planning to take it to a shop this week, good to know about checking both the valve and cooler. Would you mind sharing how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix? Just want to make sure I'm prepared for what's ahead. Thanks again for the help!

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up since I saw your questions. After taking my CR-V to the mechanic last week, turns out I was spot on, it was definitely the EGR valve causing all that trouble. The final bill came to 355€ to fix the faulty valve that was completely stuck. I'm really happy to report that my car's running like a dream now! All those annoying symptoms, the rough idle, power loss, and that nasty exhaust smell, they're completely gone. The engine's purring smoothly again, just like it should. Honestly, it was worth every penny. The mechanic did a thorough job diagnosing the Functional error in the EGR valve and fixing it properly. No more check engine light either, which is a huge relief. Hope your repair goes just as smoothly as mine did. Let us know how it turns out!

Thanks so much for the update! I just got back from the mechanic today, and you won't believe it, my experience was almost identical to yours! The mechanic found the EGR valve completely clogged up, just as you described. Repair cost was pretty similar too, around 375. Took them about 5 hours to complete everything, including cleaning and testing. I've just driven it home and wow, what a difference! The engine's running super smooth now, no more stalling or power issues. That annoying exhaust smell is completely gone too. Such a relief to have my car back to normal. Really appreciate everyone's help here, especially your detailed feedback. It definitely made me feel more confident about getting it fixed. Guess I've found my new go-to mechanic too, they were really thorough and explained everything clearly. Thanks again for all the advice!
