Honda HRV Overheating and Control Unit Error

I'm having a head-scratcher with my 2016 Honda HRV diesel. It has 244544 km on the clock. I'm getting some concerning symptoms: the engine is overheating, the check engine light is on, and there's coolant spilling under the vehicle – looks like over-pressure in the cooling system. I ran a diagnostic and it points to a control unit communication error. I'm thinking it might be a dodgy cable or plug somewhere causing this, but I'm not sure where to start looking.

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Honda HRV diesel with 244,544 km is experiencing engine overheating, a check engine light, and coolant leakage, indicating over-pressure in the cooling system. A diagnostic points to a control unit communication error, possibly due to a faulty cable or plug. The suggested solution is to inspect the wiring harness and connectors for corrosion or damage, particularly those related to the engine management system. The issue was resolved by cleaning a corroded plug on the control unit.

Your situation sounds quite familiar. I once encountered a similar predicament with my Opel Insignia. Overheating, warning lights, and coolant loss can indeed stem from communication issues with a control module. The diagnostic trouble code you're seeing, related to the data link, is a strong clue. Have you inspected the wiring harness and connectors for any signs of corrosion, damage, or loose connections?

You mentioned inspecting the wiring harness. Was the issue with your Opel also related to a defective connection, and if so, where exactly should I be focusing my attention on the HRV? Are there any specific areas that are known to be problematic?

Indeed, in my Opel's case, the problem was traced to a corroded connector on the engine control unit. While the specific location might differ between our vehicles, I would strongly advise thoroughly examining all connections related to the engine management system and sensors. Given the symptoms you described, it would be wise to get it to a workshop to avoid consequential damage. The bill was around 95€.

Thank you for sharing your experience! It's reassuring to know someone else has encountered a similar issue. I appreciate the suggestion of checking the connections. The mechanic confirmed it was a corroded plug on the control unit, just as you suspected. They cleaned it and now everything seems to be working fine. Thanks again!
