Honda Jade Exhaust Leak

I'm getting so frustrated with my 2015 Honda Jade hybrid! The check engine light keeps popping on, and I pulled the error codes – something about the NOx storage catalyst aging. Plus, I swear I can smell exhaust fumes more than usual. It's got 81042 km on the clock. Could this be something major? I read somewhere it might affect my fuel efficiency too? I hope that by fixing this emissions system stuff I will improve the air quality!

Summary of the thread

A 2015 Honda Jade hybrid owner experienced a persistent check engine light and increased exhaust fumes, with error codes indicating NOx storage catalyst aging. The problem was suspected to be an exhaust leak, which could also affect fuel efficiency. Upon inspection by a mechanic, a small crack in the exhaust pipe was identified and repaired, resolving the issue.

That sounds eerily familiar. I had almost the exact same symptoms with my 2017 Volvo V60 – check engine light, error codes related to the catalytic converter, and a faint smell of exhaust. Did you check for any visible leaks in your exhaust system? In my case, that was the culprit. Also, if your catalytic converter isn't working right, or your NOx catalyst is going bad, your fuel efficiency can take a nosedive. It's like your car is breathing through a straw!

A leak in the exhaust system, you say? I haven't checked specifically for that, but that exhaust smell makes a lot of sense now. Where exactly should I be looking for this leak? I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to car repairs beyond the basics but I will try my best to figure this out. Is it something easily visible or do I need to get under the car and poke around?

Yep, definitely get under the car and take a good look. For me, it was a cracked exhaust pipe near the catalytic converter. I couldn't see it at first glance, but when I ran my hand along the pipe (when it was cool, of course!), I could feel the escaping exhaust. Honestly, unless you're really comfortable with car repairs, I'd suggest taking it to a trusted workshop. Dealing with exhaust systems can be tricky and you don't want to mess with your car's emissions system even more, not only for the sake of air quality but also for your wallet.

Thanks a million for the advice! A leak in the exhaust system was indeed the problem! Took it to a mechanic, and they found a small crack in the exhaust pipe. They replaced the section, and the total repair cost was 265€. Check engine light is gone, and hopefully, my fuel efficiency will improve! Appreciate the help!
