Honda Legend VANOS Failure
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Honda Legend owner is experiencing issues with the check engine light and increased fuel consumption, suspecting a VANOS failure. The problem is thought to be related to either a faulty camshaft solenoid valve or power supply issues. Another person suggested checking for oil sludge, particularly around the valve cover and oil pan, as a potential cause. Ultimately, the issue was confirmed to be a faulty camshaft solenoid valve, which was resolved by a professional, restoring normal fuel consumption and turning off the check engine light.

Oil sludge, huh? Interesting. I hadn't considered that. Where exactly should I be looking for sludge? Any specific spots that are prone to buildup?

Yeah, it's worth a look. Check around the valve cover and in the oil pan if you can. Honestly, if you're not comfortable digging too deep, it might be worth getting a professional opinion. They can properly diagnose the problem and prevent further damage. I ended up having to go to the workshop in the end.

Thanks for the tip about the oil sludge and the advice to see a professional. Turns out it was a faulty camshaft solenoid valve, just like I suspected! Cost me around 250€ to get it sorted, but at least my fuel consumption is back to normal and that pesky check engine light is finally off!

I had a similar issue with my Legend. The check engine light was on, and the fuel economy was terrible. I suspected a VANOS issue, but I didn't have the right tools to diagnose it myself. Have you checked for oil sludge? That was part of my problem.
