Hybrid Battery Crisis? Warning Signs You Can't Ignore

Hey all! Need some advice about my 2013 Honda Legend Hybrid (236K km). Having trouble with start-ups lately, battery seems weak and I've noticed all lights are dimmer than usual, both inside and out. Pretty sure it's an electrical issue, maybe voltage-related. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hoping to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Any suggestions on what might be causing this and tips for finding a trustworthy mechanic to handle hybrid electrical issues? Thanks!

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Honda Legend Hybrid is experiencing weak start-ups and dim lights, indicating potential electrical issues. Possible causes include a failing 12V battery, a faulty converter, or loose wiring connections affecting voltage. Solutions involve checking both the 12V and hybrid batteries, inspecting the converter, and ensuring all connections are secure. Seeking a mechanic with hybrid certification and proper diagnostic equipment is recommended for accurate diagnosis and repair.

Hey there! I faced almost identical issues with my 2016 Honda Accord Hybrid last winter. Started with dim lights and weak starts, then got worse. Took it to a garage that specializes in hybrids. Turned out both my 12V battery and the main hybrid battery were struggling. The 12V battery was completely dead and needed replacement. The hybrid battery wasn't charging properly due to a faulty converter, this was actually the serious part, as it affected the entire electrical system. The repair involved replacing the 12V battery, fixing the converter, and recalibrating the hybrid system. Took about two days to complete all the work, but it's been running perfectly since then. Since you're dealing with a hybrid, definitely look for a shop with hybrid certification and experience. Ask them about their hybrid diagnostic equipment, that's how I found my current mechanic. They should be able to run a full system check to pinpoint whether it's just the 12V battery or something more complex in the hybrid system. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since I'm seeing such similar symptoms. It's good to know it could be related to both batteries and the converter, makes total sense now that I think about it. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for all those repairs? Also, have you had any other electrical problems since getting it fixed? Really appreciate the tip about checking for hybrid certification too. Definitely gonna ask about their diagnostic equipment when I start calling around.

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! Actually, I just got my car back from the mechanic last week where they fixed the undervoltage issue. Turned out it was just the 12V battery that was defective, much simpler than my previous problems! Total bill came to 290€ for the battery replacement and diagnostic work. Since the repair, everything's been running perfectly, no more dim lights or starting issues. It's like having a new car again! Much less complicated than my previous converter problem, thankfully. I've had zero electrical problems since the fix. The lights are bright, starts are strong, and all systems are working exactly as they should. The hybrid system is functioning flawlessly too. And you're right to focus on finding a certified hybrid mechanic. The one I recommended earlier has continued to be excellent, they really know their stuff when it comes to these complex systems. Worth every penny to have someone who really understands hybrid vehicles. Let me know how it goes with your repairs! Always interested to hear how these things turn out.

Thanks for the detailed update! Really glad to hear your repair was straightforward and relatively affordable. Just got back from the mechanic myself, took your advice and found one with proper hybrid certification. Funny enough, my issue was similar but slightly different. They found my 12V battery was fine, but there was a loose connection in the wiring harness that was causing the voltage problems. The mechanic fixed it up, cleaned all the connections, and ran a full diagnostic test. Total cost was pretty reasonable, around 200 bucks. Car's running great now! All lights are back to full brightness, and the startup is super smooth. Definitely a relief it wasn't anything major with the hybrid system. Think I've found my new go-to mechanic too, they were really transparent about everything and took the time to explain what they were doing. Thanks again for sharing your experience, helped me know what to look for and what questions to ask. Really appreciate the guidance!
