Hyundai i30 high fuel consumption and stalling
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Hyundai i30 diesel was experiencing high fuel consumption, engine stalling, and a persistent check engine light, with smoke observed during acceleration. The suspected cause was a faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor. After confirming the issue at a workshop, replacing the MAF sensor resolved the problems, restoring normal fuel economy and eliminating stalling and the check engine light.

Thanks for the quick reply! I did check the air filter, and it seemed relatively clean, but I'll double-check it. The performance has definitely declined, especially when accelerating. Was it definitely the MAF sensor in your case, and how did you resolve it?

Yes, all signs pointed to the MAF sensor being defective. Given your symptoms and the performance decline, it's highly likely. I'd recommend getting it diagnosed properly at a workshop to confirm. Replacing it should solve the issues.

Thanks a lot for your help! I took it to a local workshop, and they confirmed it was indeed the MAF sensor. They replaced it for 365€, and the car is now running perfectly. Fuel economy is back to normal, no more stalling, and the check engine light is off. Appreciate your advice!

I had a similar problem with my i30. High fuel consumption, engine light... all the same. Have you checked your air filter recently? A dirty air filter can sometimes cause the MAF sensor to malfunction. Also, any noticeable decline in overall engine performance?
