Hyundai i30 transmission fault
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Hyundai i30 with a gasoline engine exhibited a transmission fault, indicated by an engine warning light and an error code pointing to a transmission oil pressure sensor issue. The symptoms included the gearbox entering emergency mode, rough shifting, slipping, and occasional grinding noises. The problem was resolved by a mechanic who identified a low gearbox oil level, performed a gearbox oil service, and replaced the faulty pressure switch, restoring smooth shifting.

Thanks for the quick reply! I hadn't thought about the oil level specifically. Where exactly is the transmission oil level dipstick located on the i30, or is there another way to check it? And if it's low, what type of oil should I be topping it up with?

I am not familiar with the exact specifics of your Hyundai i30. My Astra did not have a dipstick for the gearbox. I had it checked by a mechanic at the workshop. Considering the slipping and grinding, it's probably best to get it professionally diagnosed, especially since you're dealing with a transmission sensor fault. They will be able to determine the exact oil type and level needed.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a trusted mechanic and you were spot on: the gearbox oil level was too low. They topped it up after they did a gearbox oil service and replaced the faulty pressure switch, and the shifting is smooth again. Total cost was around 365€.

I had similar symptoms with my old Opel Astra, though it was a slightly different engine. The error was also related to transmission and the car sometimes didn't shift up or down correctly. Do you know if the oil level in your gearbox is sufficient? That was the root cause in my case. A low oil level can cause these pressure issues.
