Hyundai i40 Exhaust Leak and Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Hyundai i40 experienced a check engine light, reduced power, and excessive fuel consumption, suspected to be due to an exhaust temperature sensor issue and a possible exhaust leak. A leak can indeed affect sensor readings, leading to these problems. The solution involved replacing the faulty sensor and repairing the corroded exhaust pipe section, resolving the issues and restoring the car's performance.

Interesting! When you say "exhaust component", what are you referring to? Was it also related to the exhaust sensor or something else within the emission control system? I’m trying to narrow down the possibilities.

It wasn't the exhaust sensor itself, but the component was located right before the sensor. The garage said the faulty reading triggered by the leak was messing with the engine's air/fuel mixture. If you suspect a leak and your MPG is suffering, get it checked by a professional. It could save time and potential headaches.

I booked it in with my local shop. It was indeed a leak in the exhaust system. The faulty exhaust temperature sensor was replaced, along with the corroded section of pipe. Repair cost me 265€. It runs like a dream now!

That sounds frustrating! I had similar symptoms with my old Opel Astra: engine light, sluggish performance, and terrible fuel economy. It turned out to be a faulty exhaust component. Have you checked for visible damage along the exhaust pipe?
