i20 Engine Control Malfunction
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Hyundai i20 diesel with 198,000 km was experiencing an engine control malfunction, preventing it from starting. The initial suspicion was loose battery cable connections. After further discussion, it was suggested that engine software issues might also be a cause, requiring professional diagnostic tools. Ultimately, the problem was confirmed to be bad battery cable connections, which were cleaned at a workshop, resolving the issue.

Engine software, huh? How would I check that, exactly? Is it something I can do myself, or am I looking at a trip to the workshop?

Well, on my Astra, it needed a diagnostic tool plugged in, which a normal person doesn't own. It's kind of like trying to listen to music without any headphones – you're not going to get very far. Best to get it checked by someone who knows what they're doing.

Thanks for the advice! Turns out you were spot on about needing it checked. The battery cable connections were indeed bad, creating the error. Workshop cleaned them up, and it cost me 155€. Runs like new now!

That sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra – also a diesel, funnily enough. It wouldn't start, and the engine fault light was on. Have you checked the engine software? Maybe something got corrupted.
