i30 engine sluggish and hissing

Hey, I'm having a weird issue with my 2021 Hyundai i30, gasoline engine, around 46k kilometers. The check engine light is on, and the car feels sluggish, like it's lost a ton of power. Engine response is terrible, and sometimes it even stalls when I'm idling. Fuel consumption has also gone up noticeably. I also hear a whistling noise, especially a loud hissing sound when I accelerate. Could this be a turbo issue? I'm thinking maybe the wastegate is faulty?

Summary of the thread

A 2021 Hyundai i30 owner reported issues with the engine being sluggish, a check engine light, increased fuel consumption, and a hissing noise during acceleration. The problem was suspected to be related to the turbo, possibly a faulty wastegate. After consulting with another individual who suggested checking the diverter valve and throttle body, the owner took the car to a workshop. The issue was confirmed to be a defect in the wastegate valve, which was replaced, resolving the problem.

Sounds frustrating! I had a similar problem with my old 2016 Opel Astra. Check engine light, power loss, and a whistling noise. It ended up being a bad diverter valve. Does the Hyundai i30 have a diverter valve too? Maybe you should check the throttle body as well.

Thanks for the quick response! A diverter valve, huh? I'll look into that. Where is that typically located, and what exactly does it do? Could a faulty throttle body cause similar symptoms? Is it difficult to check myself?

On my Astra, the diverter valve was right next to the turbo. Its job is to recirculate air when you let off the gas, preventing turbo lag. A faulty one can definitely cause power loss and weird noises. As for the throttle body, yes, a dirty or faulty one can cause stalling and poor engine response. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself. Take it to a workshop.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on. It was indeed a defect in the wastegate valve. They replaced it, and the car is running perfectly again. Cost me around 860€, but it was worth it. Appreciate the help!
