i30 Power Steering Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Hyundai i30 owner reported issues with the power steering, including a vibrating steering wheel, spongy handling, and increased steering effort, despite checking fluid levels. The problem was suspected to be related to the steering rack, pressure hose, or steering pump. However, it was suggested that the issue might be due to an electrical fault, specifically loose or corroded cable and plug connections at the power steering pump. Upon inspection, a loose connection was found and fixed, resolving the problem and clearing the error code.

Thanks for the quick response! When you say 'cable and plug connections,' are you referring to the connections directly on the steering pump, or are there other relevant connections I should be looking for? Also, were your symptoms intermittent, or did the problem occur constantly?

Indeed. I am referring to the cable and plug connections directly at the power steering pump, but also trace the wiring harness back as far as you can easily access. Look for any signs of corrosion, damage, or loose connections. In my case, the symptoms were intermittent at first, becoming more frequent over time. I would still strongly advise a visit to a reputable workshop. They have the tools to properly diagnose electrical faults and may save you a great deal of time and money. Ignoring it could lead to further component damage. Best of luck.

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! I took your suggestion and checked all the cable and plug connections. Turns out there was a loose connection at the pump, just as you suspected. Cleaned it up, secured it properly, and the power steering is back! Error code is gone, too. The entire repair cost me only 95€! I appreciate your help!

Greetings. Your symptoms do sound quite concerning. I had a similar issue with my i30 some time ago. While checking fluid levels is a good first step, the problem you describe – the vibration, spongy handling, error codes, and increased steering effort – strongly suggests an electrical fault. Have you checked the cable and plug connections to the power steering components? A defective connection can cause precisely these symptoms. Before you start thinking about replacing the steering rack or pump, thoroughly inspect the wiring.
