Infiniti JX Stalling & Smoking: Need Expert Help

Hey everyone, my 2012 Infiniti JX Hybrid (63,184 km) is giving me nightmares lately. The engine's been acting up shutting off unusually, losing power, and spewing black smoke when I accelerate. The car jerks badly, and fuel consumption has gone through the roof. I suspect it might be the fuel volume regulator, but after a previous bad experience with my mechanic, I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your experiences and trusted mechanic recommendations. Thanks!

Hey there, I had almost identical issues with my 2015 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid last winter. The symptoms you're describing are exactly what I experienced the unusual shutdowns, power loss, and black smoke were textbook signs of a failing high-pressure fuel pump in my case. Initially, I thought it was something minor, but when I finally took it to the dealer (after my trusted mechanic couldn't properly diagnose it), they confirmed the high-pressure pump was shot. It was a serious repair that took about three days to complete, as they had to replace the entire pump assembly. The symptoms got worse pretty quickly after they first appeared on my car (I was at 58,000 km when it happened). Don't wait too long a faulty high-pressure pump can potentially damage other components in your fuel system. If you're in doubt about your mechanic, I'd strongly suggest going to an Infiniti dealer for this specific issue. These hybrid systems are pretty complex, and you'll want someone who knows these engines inside out. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! This definitely sounds like what I'm dealing with, and I appreciate the heads up about the high-pressure fuel pump. I'll probably bite the bullet and head to the dealer as you suggested. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since you got it fixed? Just wondering if any related issues popped up afterward.

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting my QX60 fixed at the dealer, it's been running like a dream. The total bill came to 1510€ for the high-pressure pump replacement, which definitely wasn't cheap, but totally worth it considering how well the car's performing now. They also spotted and fixed the fuel volume regulator while they were at it, which turned out to be faulty too. It's been over a year since the repair, and I haven't had a single issue pop up. No more black smoke, no jerking, and my fuel economy is back to normal. The car feels as smooth as when I first got it. One thing I'm really glad about is that I didn't wait too long to get it fixed the mechanic mentioned that leaving it could've caused more expensive damage down the line. So yeah, definitely get yours checked out at the dealer. These hybrid systems are tricky, and you want someone who really knows what they're doing. Let me know how it goes with yours!

Thanks a lot for the detailed info! I've finally got my car sorted out yesterday. Took your advice and went straight to the dealer turns out you were spot on! Had the same issue with the high-pressure pump and regulator. Damage to my wallet was about 1600€, a bit more than yours but I guess prices have gone up. Took them two days to fix everything, but wow, what a difference! Car's running super smooth now, no more black smoke or unusual shutdowns. Honestly feels like driving a new car. You were right about going to the dealer they really knew their stuff. The mechanic walked me through everything they did, and even showed me the old parts. Definitely better than my previous mechanic's confused looks! Really appreciate your help with this. You saved me from potentially making the problem worse by waiting. Thanks again for sharing your experience it made dealing with this whole situation much less stressful!
