Insight EGR Valve Symptoms
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Honda Insight hybrid is experiencing reduced engine power, a check engine light, smoke on acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a loud hissing sound. These symptoms suggest a potentially jammed EGR valve, which can disrupt the air-fuel mixture and cause such issues. A similar problem in another vehicle was resolved by checking and replacing the EGR valve, and it is recommended to have a professional diagnostic to confirm and address the issue.

Interesting parallel! I haven’t smelled anything from the exhaust, but your Opel Astra symptoms sound like my problem. What was the cause and fix? Was your catalytic converter affected? Did you see higher emissions?

I am no expert but it sounds like we had the same issues. My mechanic said the EGR valve was jammed, causing chaos with the air-fuel mixture. Get yours checked by a professional. It’s probably the safest bet.

Thanks for the insights. I'll schedule a diagnostic with a mechanic. The repair should be about 355€, including EGR valve replacement and system recalibration. Your help is much appreciated.

I don't know much about the Honda Insight but your symptoms sound like my old 2014 Opel Astra, which started with the check engine light and rough idling. Then the engine choked, especially when getting up to speed. Are you noticing any strange smells from the exhaust, like burnt rubber?
