Where exactly is the flap motor located? Is it something I could potentially check myself, or am I better off taking it to a mechanic? I'm not super experienced with exhaust components.

It's part of the exhaust system, near the back. Honestly, unless you're comfortable working under the car, I'd suggest getting a professional to take a look. Could save you a headache. In my case the defective exhaust flap caused the noises and the error. The garage confirmed the issue.

Okay, thanks for the advice! I'll take it to a workshop and have them check the exhaust flaps and flap motor. Hopefully, it won't cost me an arm and a leg. Fingers crossed it's around the 190€ mark. Appreciate the help!

Sounds familiar. I have an ix35 as well, and I experienced similar symptoms a while back louder exhaust and error codes. Have you checked the flap motor itself? That was the issue for me.
