Regarding the wiring harness, which specific connections should I check? Could a loose timing chain cause VANOS problems?

The wiring harness check is just to rule out the simple stuff. If your Jazz has these symptoms, especially with that mileage, it's probably the VANOS solenoid. Checking the wiring is like trying to fix a leaky faucet with duct tape. It might work temporarily, but the real problem will persist. Get it checked out at a workshop; with the proper diagnostics and the defective solenoid, it shouldn't cost more than 250€.

I took my Jazz to a mechanic, and you were right: the Inlet VANOS solenoid was the problem. A replacement fixed it. Thanks for your help.

I drive a Jazz too, and your description sounds familiar. The check engine light and high fuel consumption were exactly what I experienced. I'd wager it is the VANOS solenoid. It's like a clogged artery in your car's engine. Have you tried checking the wiring harness to the solenoid? Sometimes, a loose connection can mimic a faulty solenoid.
