Juke Engine Control Malfunction

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2012 Nissan Juke, diesel engine. It has only 25069 km on the odometer. The problem is an engine control malfunction; the engine refuses to start. I've checked fuel levels and for leaks. Could this be an ECU failure?

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Nissan Juke with a diesel engine experienced an engine control malfunction, preventing it from starting. Initial concerns included a potential ECU failure. However, it was suggested to first check simpler issues like battery connections, which can mimic more serious problems. After cleaning and securing the battery connections, the car started immediately, resolving the issue without needing further diagnostics or repairs.

It's frustrating when the engine won't start. While ECU failure is possible, consider simpler explanations first. Are you certain the battery connections are secure and free from corrosion? Poor connections can mimic more serious issues. Has the car been sitting idle? Stale fuel can sometimes prevent starting, especially in diesel engines. Have you tried any basic engine diagnostics beyond checking fuel levels? A generic OBD2 scanner might reveal some clues, even if the engine doesn't start.

Thanks for the prompt response. I'll double-check the battery connections. I didn't consider that. I don't own an OBD2 scanner. Would a generic scanner be sufficient, or should I invest in a more sophisticated model? Also, could a faulty fuel injection system cause these symptoms, even with adequate fuel levels?

A generic OBD2 scanner should provide a basic error code. More sophisticated models offer advanced diagnostics, but a basic one is adequate for initial troubleshooting. Yes, a faulty fuel injection system could cause starting problems, even if fuel is present. Before expensive fuel injection repairs, ensure those battery connections are pristine. If the problem persists, and you are not comfortable with more advanced engine diagnostics, I'd advise seeking a reputable workshop. They can perform comprehensive tests to pinpoint the cause and avoid expensive guesswork.

I appreciate your advice. I inspected the battery cable connections, and they were indeed quite poor. I cleaned them thoroughly and ensured they were properly secured. The car started immediately! The final repair bill came to 155€, but I am relieved it was a simple fix. Thank you again for your time and expertise.
