Laguna automatic transmission fault

Renault Laguna 2005 diesel refuses to start. Check engine light is on, error memory says defective automatic transmission parking position. Gearbox slips and shifts uncleanly. Mileage is 168496 km. Could it be a defective control unit?

I had a similar issue with my Laguna. Is yours also an automatic? Does it happen sometimes, or is it a constant problem now? Did you check the gear linkage?

Yes, it's an automatic. The problem is constant now. I haven't checked the gear linkage myself; I'm not experienced with that. Is that something I can easily inspect?

Given that it's constant and you're not comfortable checking the linkage, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. It turned out to be a fault with the control unit in my case. It cost me around 1000€ to repair.
