Laguna Crankshaft Sensor Problem

My 2001 Renault Laguna with a gasoline engine is giving me headaches. The check engine light is on, and the car feels sluggish, like it's lost power. Engine response is terrible, and I'm filling up the tank way more often. I've heard something about the crankshaft to camshaft reference value being off. Any ideas?

Sounds like a potential crankshaft sensor issue. When that sensor starts going bad, it can really mess with the engine synchronization. The ECU relies on signals from both the crankshaft and camshaft sensors to properly time the ignition and fuel injection. If the crankshaft sensor is sending bad data, the ECU won't know the exact position of the crankshaft. Is the car difficult to start, or does it stall sometimes?

Starting isn't an issue, and it hasn't stalled yet, thankfully. But if the crankshaft sensor is the culprit, how can I be sure? Is there any way to test it myself, or am I better off just replacing it?

While a multimeter can give you a basic resistance reading, it won't tell you if the sensor is intermittently failing under load. Given the symptoms – engine light, reduced power, poor response, and increased fuel consumption, all pointing to potential engine synchronization issues, and the fact that it's not stalling – it's probably the crank sensor. But without proper diagnostic tools, you will just be guessing. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop.

I took it to a shop, and you were spot on. It was indeed the crankshaft sensor. The total repair, including parts and labor, came out to 340€. Runs like new now!
