Laguna Gear Shift Indicator Failure

My 2009 Renault Laguna (gasoline engine) has a malfunctioning gear shift indicator display. I can't engage the gears, and the automatic transmission shifts erratically, with slippage, unclean shifts, and grinding noises. Diagnostic testing shows an error, and the gear selection display in the speedometer is dead. I suspect a defective control unit. Has anyone experienced this?
