Laguna intake manifold leak

My 2002 Renault Laguna diesel is giving me major headaches. It's got 122140 km on the clock and recently it started jerking when I accelerate. The check engine light is on, and I'm getting a 'reduced engine power' warning. Sometimes it even stalls at idle! It's running really rough and smells strongly of exhaust. I plugged in an OBD reader and it shows an error which probably indicates the intake manifold. Any ideas? Could it be a vacuum leak or a manifold sensor?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Renault Laguna diesel was experiencing jerking during acceleration, a check engine light, reduced engine power warning, stalling at idle, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell. These symptoms suggested a potential intake manifold issue, possibly due to a vacuum leak or faulty manifold sensor. A recommendation was made to inspect for scorching or leaks around the manifold, with advice to consult a mechanic for a thorough diagnosis. The problem was confirmed as a leaking intake manifold due to scorching, which was resolved by replacement, restoring smooth operation.

I had a similar issue with my Laguna. The symptoms you describe strongly suggest a problem with the intake manifold. Have you checked for any signs of scorching or leaking around the manifold? A faulty gasket can also cause these issues. I'd advise a thorough inspection before anything else.

Thanks for the tip! Where exactly should I be looking for the scorching or leaks? Is it something I can check myself, or am I better off taking it to a workshop?

While a visual inspection might reveal obvious damage, detecting subtle leaks often requires specialized equipment like a smoke tester. Given the symptoms and the potential complexity of the intake manifold system, including possible gasket leaks affecting engine performance, I recommend consulting a qualified mechanic. Continuing to drive with a suspected intake manifold issue could lead to further engine damage. It is a serious issue.

Thanks for the advice! Took it to the workshop today, and you were spot on! Turns out the intake manifold was leaking because of scorching. Cost me 1180€ to replace, but at least it's running smoothly now. Appreciate the help!
